Life at the Diamond Hitch
Mark Miller, master gardener, forester and mule skinner, whips the Diamond Hitch into shape
with his 1939 John Deere. He has seeded the mule pasture with a permanent combination of brome, wild rye, clover,
fescue and a variety of other seeds. Now the whole trick is keeping the mules on the other side of the fence so the
pasture can mature and reseed itself.
Aside from the pasture, Mark is growing all of our vegetables. We have three freezers and the spinach, basil, green beans, corn, cabbage, onions, beets and the most flavorful carrots on the planet get us through the winter.

Mark is in love with Juanita Jo, the Percheron-Appy mule I picked up on my trip in 1995 through the Catlow Valley in southeast Oregon. Because of her draft horse lineage, she has a very docile and sweet temperament. They are a perfect match. He calls Juanita his "big girl" which makes me his "little girl". Works for me!
